Competition, an important behavior change technique, has been increasingly leveraged to promote health behaviors in online settings. Consumer health IT designers have embedded the use of wearable devices and fitness apps within a constructive competition context to promote sustained exercise behaviors. However, the role of the technology-enabled competition platform in cultivating sustained exercise behaviors remains unclear. To address this issue, we examine the impact of technology-enabled competition on sustained exercise behaviors while accounting for the heterogeneity of individuals’ exercise behaviors. We theorize competitions as comparison processes with different comparison referents in a repeated game scenario by emphasizing the relationship with competitors and the importance of competitors’ information. Our empirical analysis is based on longitudinal panel data of wearable device and fitness app users collected from a popular online fitness platform. Results reveal that individuals are heterogeneous in their exercise behaviors and three individual segments (i.e., active, moderate, inactive segment) were found. We find that performance ranking is positively related to sustained exercise behaviors of individuals in all three segments. Competing with connected peers with a high level of companionship is especially conducive to the inactive segment’s sustained exercise behaviors. Awareness cues provided by the mobile app trackers are helpful in visualizing the competitive interactions and social relationships with opponents. Our findings provide strategic insights for consumer health IT providers on how to precisely engage different types of individuals and exercising individuals with differing motivating strategies.
