Seminar 1: Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) in Management Research (Please Bring a Laptop Computer.)

摘要：In statistics, qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is a data analysis technique for determining which logical conclusions a data set supports. The analysis begins with listing and counting all the combinations of variables observed in the data set, followed by applying the rules of logical inference to determine which descriptive inferences or implications the data supports. The technique was originally developed by Professor Charles Ragin (UC Irvine) in 1987. In 2008, Professor Charles Ragin further promoted the QCA methodology (including crisp-set QCA and fuzzy-set QCA) as a way of “redesigning social inquiry”.

Since the first paper applied QCA methodology appears Journal of International Business Studies in 2008, and the first QCA paper published in Academy of Management Journal in 2011, QCA, especially fsQCA, has been gradually accepted as an innovative methodology by these mainstream management journals. The interactive workshop serves three purposes: 1) sharing fsQCA learning experience with colleagues in management research; 2) providing some hands-on help and experience with fsQCA3.0 and 3.5 software; 3) discussing some possible collaboration projects by applying the fsQCA technique, that is, redesigning social inquiry.

Seminar 2: Where to Seek Strategic Assets for Competitive Catch-up? A Comparative Study of EMNEs Expanding into Foreign Strategic Factor Markets 

摘要：Emerging multinational enterprises (EMNEs) often engage in strategic-asset-seeking foreign direct investment (FDI) for competitive catch-up. This study explores the linkages between an EMNE’s competitive scenario consisting of a configuration of its awareness-motivation-capability (AMC) conditions and the comparative institutional advantages of its strategic-asset-seeking destination. Our configurational analyses of Chinese FDIs in the technology-intensive industries of OECD countries reveal a taxonomy of four distinct asset-seeking strategies of EMNEs. Our findings shed novel insights into the strategic variations within EMNEs based on a theoretically and methodologically extended AMC framework. This study also extends the varieties of capitalism literature by addressing the implications of comparative institutional advantages for foreign entrants, rather than domestic incumbent firms.

范笛（Di Fan）副教授擅长fsQCA的数据分析方法，具有丰富的定性比较分析（QCA，包括模糊集QCA和明确集QCA）方面的专业知识。自 2015 年至今，范笛副教授一直是Compasss顾问委员会委员（Compasss 是 QCA 研究方法方面的全球顶级学术协会），也是澳新地区在该组织的唯一代表，具备突出的研究表现和数据分析能力，有近十篇基于fsQCA的研究论文发表在Organization Studies等国际一流期刊上。其过去十年间其主要研究领域是国际商业战略与国际人力资源。迄今为止，范笛副教授已拥有35篇同行审阅的英文期刊出版（如Organization Studies，Regional Studies，Technovation，Long Range Planning，Academy of Management Learning & Education，Journal of World Business，International Business Review，Global Strategy Journal，Asia Pacific Journal of Management，Industrial Marketing Management，International Human Resource Management，Human Resource Management Review和Journal of Business Ethics等）。
