Prior studies suggest that platform owners’ appropriate use of information disclosure can enhance user engagement and facilitate market exchanges. Disclosure of personal information, however, introduces privacy concerns related to its identifiability. This study examines how the identifiability of personal information (deidentified vs. identifiable) disclosed by a platform affects users’ engagement with sellers. To identify the causal effect, we ran a randomized field experiment on a major online marketplace with two app interfaces identical except for their information‐disclosure settings. We find that disclosure of deidentified personal information enhances user engagement—more clicks, product views, and seller views—compared to those exposed to fully identifiable information. This positive effect is amplified for dual-role users who also sell on the platform, particularly those selling personal products. Our study has important implications for platform owners to manage the identifiability of users’ personal information and highlights the need for privacy management to consider users’ dual roles as both buyers and sellers.

李谭卉一,中国人民大学商学院助理教授。清华大学理论经济学学士(2019)、经济学博士(2024),瑞典斯德哥尔摩经济学院博士后(2025);曾为美国科罗拉多大学博尔德联合培养博士生,加州大学伯克利分校访问学生。她的研究聚焦于平台生态与数字创新,包括平台战略、数据治理、开源创新、共享经济等话题。曾获清华大学优秀博士论文、优秀博士毕业生、美国管理学年会(AOM)最佳论文收录、欧洲管理学年会(EURAM)最佳论文等荣誉。
