摘要：The share ownership reform of state-owned commercial banks in China represents a significant milestone in the country’s financial development, playing a significant role in enhancing the efficiency of its financial system and fostering remarkable economic growth in the early 21st century. Based on spatial relationships between bank branches and firms, this study utilizes data from the Annual Survey of Industrial Firms to examine the effects of the share ownership reform on manufacturing firms’ productivity. Our findings indicate a significant improvement in the total factor productivity of firms situated in areas with a higher density of reformed bank branches following the reform, particularly those heavily depend on external financing. Furthermore, this impact is more pronounced among non-state-owned enterprises. The primary mechanism appears to be the increased accessibility of bank credit from state-owned commercial banks, which stimulates firms’ research and development investment as well as patent applications.
