演讲摘要:

Growing global concern about the problems associated with concentrated market power in the digital economy is leading to a renewed interest in competition policy globally. This talk examines how market structure in China’s digital economy has evolved under a shifting regulatory environment, while also introducing an emerging research agenda on the longer-term competitive dynamics of digital markets. The study presented here centers on China’s recent “tech crackdown,” treating the shift in competition policy that began in late 2020 as a quasi-natural experiment. Leveraging stock-market data from 1,142 publicly listed Chinese ICT firms, it develops a market-capitalisation-based approach to measuring concentration and applies difference-in-differences and event-study analyses. These analyses identify a reduction in concentration in the primary markets of China’s three dominant platforms—Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent—alongside a broader slowdown in market-capitalisation growth across China’s digital economy. These results also expose the limits of conventional revenue- and profit-based measures of market power in the digital economy.
