On 10 September 2025, SEM welcomed its international cohort of freshmen for the autumn term. Over 200 students from 41 countries gathered to study cutting-edge disciplines and experience the distinctive allure of Eastern culture.

The opening ceremony began in a lively atmosphere. Professor LIANG Jian, Deputy Dean of Tongji SEM, gave a passionate speech in which he warmly welcomed the international freshers who had travelled from far and wide. He highlighted China’s recent scientific, technological and cultural achievements, as well as its current rich and diverse social landscape. He then explored the theory of cultural adaptation through the lens of cross-cultural psychology, encouraging students to embrace Chinese culture with an open and positive mindset. He urged them to become ambassadors, bridging different civilizations, and to boldly seek out new knowledge.

Subsequently, relevant teachers from SEM provided international freshers with detailed and comprehensive explanations and guidance on matters including visa processing, academic regulations, and accommodation arrangements.

The opening ceremony featured a special program of diverse cultural experiences, enabling new students to immerse themselves in the vibrant clash and fusion of campus cultures by actively participating and engaging with others.

The school also arranged a special campus tour. Led by staff and volunteers, the international freshers strolled along the tree-lined paths of the Siping campus. The classical teaching buildings, well-stocked library and vibrant sports grounds allowed the new students to experience Tongji University’s rich historical heritage and strong academic atmosphere. The university also organized a city tour for the international students, giving them the opportunity to experience the unique charm of Shanghai.

This opening ceremony provided international freshers with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and integrate into campus life. During their studies at the Tongji SEM, international students will continually expand their professional knowledge while broadening their international perspectives.
