I. Overview
As one of the earliest business schools which was authorized to grant doctoral degrees in China, Tongji SEM launched its first PhD program of Management Science and Engineering in 1986. Up to now, Tongji SEM has launched three doctoral programs of first-level disciplines, including Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration and Applied Economics. In recent years, Tongji SEM was dedicated to explore the innovation of doctoral programs. It has achieved remarkable successes in establishing advanced management research institutions, international joint-research centers as well as inter-disciplinary research platforms. Meanwhile, Tongji SEM has furthered its collaboration with a number of top-ranking overseas universities. With its scientific research superiority, Tongji SEM has motivated its development of discipline construction and talent cultivation in recent years.

II. Introduction to Ph.D Programs
1. Management Science and Engineering
Management Science and Engineering is a first-grade discipline in management category, it comprehensively utilizes system science, management science, mathematics, economics, behavioral science and engineering methods to solve management issues in social, economic and engineering fields with the combination of information technology.
Being formerly named as “Construction Engineering Economics and Organization” in 1956, the Department of Management Science and Engineering was authorized to confer master degrees from 1979, and to confer doctoral degrees (now Management Science and Engineering) from 1986 (the 3rd batch). The department was promoted to first-grade doctoral program in 1998. The post-doctoral station was founded in 1999. The Department was elected as Shanghai Municipal Key Program in 2007, A+ discipline in the 4th China Discipline Ranking in 2017 and the first level discipline in Shanghai Gaofeng Disciplinary Construction Plan in 2018. In 2020, the programs of Information Management and Information System and Engineering Management were both listed as national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites. With abundant teaching staffs, the department has built a strong faculty team with reasonable structure, active academic thoughts and scientific collaborative research ability. After years of development, the Management Science and Engineering Department currently owns 66 teachers, among whom there is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of National “Thousand-Talents Program”, o a Professor-at-large in Changjiang Scholar Program, and a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Also, among them two are awarded as Excellent Young Scholars from National Science Fund, and three are awarded as New Century Excellent Talents from the Education Ministry. In the teaching faculty, 27 staffs are professors and 19 staffs are associate professors.
In the recent ten years, a number of teachers were sent to Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University, University of California Berkley, Cambridge University, London School of Economics, Technischen Universität Berlin, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong and other renowned colleges and universities for academic visits and develop in-depth partnerships in scientific research cooperation and talents cultivation.
Over the years, the Management Science and Engineering Department has inherited the excellent tradition of Tongji University, which is staying realistic, pragmatic, innovating, and developing decent academic works. In recent years, more than 100 scientific research projects including major and key projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China were obtained, 400 papers have been published in SCI/SSCI, 500 papers have been published in EI/A&HCI/CSCD/CSSCI journals and 21 papers have been published in ESI. Through interdisciplinary research and cooperation, the department has successfully applied for the innovation research team of the Ministry of Education.
The Management Science and Engineering Department has become a comprehensive research platform which undertakes key projects of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science. It has also become a training base of enterprises’ management personnel, a project consulting service center for domestic major public projects, World Top 500 companies and China’s Top 500 companies. Benefiting from the engineering background of Tongji University, the department has significant international influence in the field of Engineering Management, Service Operation, Information Management and Traffic Management. The talents cultivated in this department are equipped with high academic standards and comprehensive abilities, which are urgently needed in the labor market.
The students of this discipline will be awarded Ph.D. Degree in Management.

2. Business Administration(English Taught)
Business administration is the first level discipline in Management category. It mainly focuses on the research and studies which are related to modern production and marketing, technology, economy, and social development.
The discipline obtained the authority of granting master degree in 1990, and doctoral degree in 1998. This discipline has a team of faculty with rational age structure, active academic thoughts and strong research ability. There are 75 faculty members in this discipline, including 2 members who belong to Yangtze River Scholar, Eminent Youth and Thousand Talents programs, 2 Outstanding Young Teachers, 20 full professors and 34 associate professors. In recent 10 years, more than 20 professors were sent to world-class universities for the purposes of training, visiting and lecturing. Cooperative relationships have been established with Harvard University, Wharton Business School, Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, Cambridge University, ESSEC in France, Mannheim University in Germany and Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.
It inherits the tradition of management discipline of Tongji University, i.e. pursuing the truth and being practical and it has been making continuous pioneering and innovative efforts to form an excellent academic atmosphere over the years. In recent three years, professors in this discipline have taken part in more than 100 research projects, including 20 national research projects, published more than 100 articles cited by SSCI. This discipline has become a research platform for major subjects of Ministry Science and Technology of China, a training base for enterprise management talents and self-starting talents, an evaluation consulting center for major domestic public projects, company and entrepreneurship projects of Fortune 500 companies in the world and in China. In virtue of Tongji University’s solid science background, it has made many achievements in modern business administration these years, especially in the management of automobile manufacture and sale enterprises, construction enterprises, and real estate enterprises. The talents who are cultivated by this discipline have gained excellent academic ability and comprehensive competency, and obtained high evaluations from their employers, thus are in great demand in the labor market.

3. Applied Economics
Since 1996, the discipline of Applied Economics of Tongji University has set up Master Degree programs of Industrial Economics, International Trade, Finance, Regional Economics and Public Finance, etc. The program for Master Degree in Applied Economics (first-level discipline) has been approved in 2006, and program for PhD in 2011. For over a decade, by combining the subject characteristics of Tongji University and construction of “Four Centers” in Shanghai and integrating the strengths of disciplines positively, the Applied Economics has gradually condensed and formed five major research directions: One is the study on the financial markets and risks which are oriented to the financial markets in China and the construction of Shanghai International Financial Center, focusing on modern financial market theory, portfolio theory and strategy, as well as financial risk analysis and pricing; The second one is the urban industrial economics oriented to the study on the optimization of urban industrial structure and urban planning in China, which focus on the urban industrial structure layout of cities and urban agglomerations, put forward the principle of the joint planning for industry and space which is called “big plan” idea, and continuously refine its theoretical system; The third one is sustainable development economics which makes researches on the hot spot of new economic development —low carbon and focuses on the study of sustainable development economics via the perspective of steady-state economics; The fourth one is regional and urban economics, which concentrates on the model of dualistic structure transition, the theory of flexible urban and the theory and its application of “core-edge”, and therefore provides theoretical support for the cities that transform its economic structure and regional economic transformation; The fifth one is international trade which is oriented to the export-oriented economy in China and the construction of Shanghai International Trade Center, focusing on the theories and policies of international trade, competitions and strategies of multinational companies and international financial risk management, therefore providing theoretical support for China’s deeper participation in international economic cooperation. These five research directions are the important bases for scientific research, intellectual cultivation and consultation on policies.

4. International Doctoral Program of Business Administration
I. Introduction to the Program
This doctoral program aims at developing management education and research elites with global perspectives, who will be dedicated to advanced researches with academic and social impact on business administration, providing theoretical basis to address the challenges in management practice, and committed to the sustainable development of society.
II. Objectives
The program taught in English is targeting at international students, which will apply the advanced theories and methodologies of business administration to the whole process of research capability development.
