Title: A Critical Analysis of One Belt, One Road as China’s Contribution to Global Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility
Speaker: Dr. Ulf Henning Richter
Time: 13:30–15:30 June 30, 2017
Place: Room 308, Tongji Building A
Coordinator: Dr. Jing Zhong
Abstract:
The author theoretically analyzes Xi Jinping’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) strategy as major pillar of China’s peaceful ascendance as global power. The global shift is accompanied by the rapid development of China’s private sector and rapidly increasing outward investment. Chinese MNCs rapid penetration into regions such as Africa or South East Asia, often referred to as “springboard strategy”, are frequently criticized for lack of transparency, overlooking the needs of the local population, and ignorance of environmental considerations. For OBOR strategy to be successful it will require a new level of corporate governance, an advanced understanding of corporate social responsibility in dealing with the needs of the host nations such as capacity building, support of local SMEs, and investments in environmentally sustainable projects to guarantee long-lasting success.
