报告内容摘要

How do employers attract the right workers? How important are posted wages vs. other job characteristics? Using data from the leading job board CareerBuilder.com, we show that most vacancies do not post wages, and, for those that do, job titles explain more than 90% of the wage variance. Job titles also explain more than 80% of the across-vacancies variance in the education and experience of applicants. Finally, failing to control for job titles leads to a spurious negative elasticity of labor supply. Thus, our results uncover the previously undocumented power of words in the job matching process.

报告人简介

Ronald Wolthoff is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2008 and was an Instructor and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago from 2008 until 2010. Most of Ronald's research focusses on how market participants (e.g., workers and firms in a labor market, or buyers and sellers in a goods market) meet and subsequently match or trade with each other, and how this process affects aggregate outcomes. His work has been published in journals like The Review of Economic of Studies, the Journal of Economic Theory, and the International Economic Review.
