Raymond Reed Baker, CPA, MBA, PhD

Ray has a deep interest in corporate governance, as both an academic and a practitioner. He began his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers and is a licensed U.S. Certified Public Accountant. From the starting point of PwC’s assurance practice, he has moved on to advise over one hundred organizations in areas including governance, board effectiveness, internal controls and mergers & acquisitions. His clients have included a range of organizations operating in the United States, China and Europe, with a more recent focus on board consulting and internal control advisory services, for public companies listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, AMEX and OTC capital markets.

On the academic side, his research is focused on the corporate governance of start-up firms and the mechanisms venture capital firms utilize to monitor start-ups. He is also an instructor for the Financial Times – Non-Executive Director Diploma course, in Hong Kong and London. Previously he served as an Adjunct Professor and instructor for the Xiamen University IFAS & University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign joint Master of Accounting Science program.

Ray has a PhD in Accounting, from the University of Hong Kong, with a research focus on corporate governance, internal controls and the Sarbanes Oxley Act. His prior education includes a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from The Pennsylvania State University. Ray’s understanding of both eastern and western business practices properly positions him to bridge divides between the two cultures.

讲座摘要:

You are close to graduating with a degree in accounting, now what? Prior to studying accounting, your parents, relatives, friends or teachers may have said to you, “study accounting…with a degree in accounting, ‘anything’ is possible”. The problem you will find however, is that at some point, you will personally need to determine what “anything” is.

With this session, Jack and Ray will introduce you to a wide variety of job roles that you can pursue. Jack will cover the concept of public accounting firms, divisions within firms, examples of work performed, career tracks and his personal experiences along the way to becoming a partner. Ray will cover career tracks in private industry, including junior, mid-level and senior roles.

This will be an opportunity for you to gain insight from experienced professionals, in an informal setting. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions that can help you to determine what your “anything” is.
