Web scraping, often called web crawling or web spidering, or “programmatically going over a collection of web pages and extracting data,” is a powerful tool for working with data on the web.With a web scraper, we can mine data about a set of products, get a large corpus of text or quantitative data to play around with, get data from a site without an official API, or just satisfy your own personal curiosity.In this lecture, we will discuss the following topics: the principle of web crawler;HTTP requests inPython;string processing in Python; regular expression in Python; page turning technique; and data storage skills in Python.

I will code in presentation, anddoa live demonstration. If you want tofollow my demonstration, please make the following preparations in advance: (1) please install Anaconda (download address: https://www.anaconda.com/); and (2) please familiar with regular expressions (material: https://www.runoob.com/regexp/regexp-syntax.html).

演讲嘉宾简介:

Wei Wang, PhD, is an associate professor at the Department of Information Management, College of Business Administration, at Huaqiao University. His research interests include crowdfunding, sentiment analysis, text analysis, and electronic commerce. His work has appeared in academic journals including Computers in Human Behavior, Behaviour& Information Technology, Industrial Management & Data Systems, Journal of Experimental & Theoretical Artificial Intelligence, New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia, Management World (China), Journal of Management Sciences in China, Systems Engineering—Theory & Practice, Studies in Science of Science, among others. He holds a PhD from Tongji University in Shanghai, a master’s and a bachelor degree from Huaqiao University in Quanzhou, China.
