In this talk, I will discuss the origin, historical development, and more contemporary research of optimal distinctiveness (OD) theory. In particular, I will use a recently published paper, Majzoubi & Zhao (2023, SMJ), to illustrate how we can leverage machine learning techniques—specifically, recommender systems—to generate important theoretical insights.

赵雁飞(Eric Zhao)博士，现任牛津大学赛德商学院副院长，战略与创业教授。在加入牛津大学之前，赵教授曾任职斯坦福大学管理科学与工程系访问教授，印第安纳大学凯莱商学院Samuel & Pauline Glaubinger 讲席教授。赵教授专注于结合最前沿的战略管理和组织理论来研究最优区分，人工智能和企业战略决策，以及制度环境与创新创业相关的问题。他的研究成果获得过多个重要奖项，包括国际管理学会创业研究新锐学者奖 (Academy of Management Emerging Scholar Award in Entrepreneurship) 和战略管理学会新锐学者奖 (Strategic Management Society Emerging Scholar Award)。赵教授是有史以来第一位同时获得两项殊荣的学者。他的专著《最优区分：指导组织和市场竞争定位的新理念》由剑桥大学出版社出版。
