讲座摘要:

“Hidden City Ticketing” (HCT) is a strategy where travelers book flights with layovers at their actual destinations and skip the final segment. Empirical studies show that such opportunities are common, appearing in roughly 15–25% of airline fares. This paper examines the impact of HCT on airline revenue and asks whether airlines should adjust prices to eliminate these opportunities. We model the airline’s dynamic pricing problem through a choice-based network revenue management framework. To reflect customer hesitation due to penalties such as loss of frequent flyer miles or travel bans, we incorporate risk perceptions using multinomial logit (MNL) and mixed MNL models. Our analysis shows that removing all HCT opportunities by constraining prices can reduce revenue more than the revenue loss caused by HCT itself. Furthermore, the impact of HCT is two-sided: While HCT can erode the airline’s revenue, it can also boost revenue in some cases. In extreme cases, revenue under HCT purchases may fall to half of the no-HCT benchmark, or rise to double it in the best case. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments to identify the conditions under which HCT is beneficial or harmful to airlines.
