Abstract: The definition of innovation has been evolving in recent years. This contribution takes stock of the intellectual progress in the areas of innovation strategy and the economics of technical change. It does this by situating the current conceptual models of innovation in a robust tradition of thought about change. It presents definitions and distinctions in a history-friendly and policy-oriented way. In this way it also lays out the ways by which the empirical research agenda may be advanced (relevant for scholars and researchers of innovation) as well as a number of think tools that are useful to enhance innovation systems (relevant for practitioners and stakeholders).
