题目:From imitation to innovation –innovation in a transition economy of China

摘要:

This topic covers several papers discussing innovation determinants of Chinese enterprises from institutional and economic geographical perspective respectively.

The author review firstly the overall innovation situation in China and find regional imbalance in innovation. The paper tries to use RIS (regional innovation system) concept to explain this imbalance and to answer question: to what extent do RIS constrain or facilitate region’s innovative capacity?

Basing on the consideration of the ineffective regional innovation system in China while the overwhelming emphasis on the effect of firm’s location on its innovation, the author develops her second paper and raises the question: Does geography really work in firm innovation? By using a multilevel methodological approach, the study disentangles effects from three levels (firm-, industry- and region-level). The empirical results show that firm’s innovation is mainly dependent on its internal resources while sectoral and regional factors only work in specific areas.

The last two papers use an unique firm-level panel database of small and medium-sized  enterprises in Shanghai. One is to analyze  innovation determinants with a particular attention on the spatial distribution of firm’s main customer-supplier relationships. The other is to  study whether the government direct R&D subsidies policy and the R&D tax incentives policy[ic1]  are complementary when they are implemented simultaneously. Both paper gain remarkable results.
