On December 7^th, 2018, the 10^th International Advisory Committee Meeting was held successfully at Tongji SEM. Prof. WU Zhiqiang, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice President of Tongji Unversity, attended the meeting.

Committee members present at the meeting included Prof. GUO Chongqing, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. WU Qidi, Director of Department of Management Science, National Natural Science foundation of China, Chairman of National Supervisory Committee of MBA Education, Former Member of Committee of Education, Science, Culture, health and Sports, National People’s Congress, China, Former Vice Minister of Education, Former President of Tongji University, Prof. ZHOU Zhen, Former Executive President of Tongji University, Former Dean of Tongji SEM, Prof. Amir REZA, Senior Vice Provost of Babson College, US, and enterprise representatives from SAP Labs China, SIEMENS(China), SAIC Motor, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and NIO. In addition, SEM’s management team, department heads, representatives of Chinese and foreign teachers and students also attended the meeting.

The meeting was hosted by Prof. HUO Jiazhen. Prof. WU Zhiqiang, on behalf of Tongji Unversity, delivered the welcome speech. Prof. WU said that the report of Nineteenth National Congress emphasized that developing China with strong education is the foundation for the great rejuvenation of the nation. We should speed up the development of first-class universities and disciplines and achieve the connotative development of higher education. In recent years, Tongji SEM has made remarkable achievements in exploring and making positive progress under the international development strategy, and obtained the authorized accreditation home and abroad. In the 4^th-round of China Discipline Evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the discipline of Management Science of Tongji SEM has been successfully evaluated as A+ level. Tongji SEM ranked the Top third in mainland China for the second time in Asia-Pacific region by Financial Times. We should make efforts continuously to develop Tongji University to be the world-class university in the future.

Prof. LI Yuan, Dean of Tongji SEM, briefed the recent development of Tongji SEM. Reviewing the “double first-class” development and suggestions of new five-year strategic plan, he introduced the actions and achievements in 2018 on talent training, academic research, team building and internationalization, and proposed for future development plan and direction. Prof. RUAN Qingsong, Deputy Dean of SEM for Bachelor, Master and Ph.D Programs, made a speech on the recent situation of talent cultivation and expressed the desire to invite corporations and alumni to participate in collaboration in all aspects, integrate resources in various industries, share data platform and improve the quality of teaching and education. Prof. SHI Qian, Deputy Dean of SEM for Professional Degree Programs, introduced the current challenges of professional degree training. Through providing internship opportunities, organizing student activities, company visits, mobile classes and embedded lectures etc., Tongji SEM encouraged students to participate in university-corporate research cooperation.

Prof. Sanjay GUPTA, the Eli & Edythe L. Broad Dean, Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University and Ms. GE Xin, Senior Director, Talent Acquisition, BP-PD/Quality/Construction, NIO have been appointed as the new members of the school’s International Advisory Committee. Prof. WU Zhiqiang presented the letter of appointment to their representatives. In the panel discussion, members expressed their opinions on how to improve talent cultivation through University-Corporate Cooperation.

Prof. GUO Chongqing agreed on the development plan in response to new opportunities and challenges. “We could try to create alliance opportunities in the fields of medical treatment, urban planning and operation, and transportation construction, to strengthen university-corporate cooperation and establish intelligent research institutes and centers.”

Prof. WU Qidi encouraged Tongji SEM to explore actively in scientific research and highlight the originality; focus on the frontier, develop new methods; demand traction, break through bottlenecks; common orientation, cross-cooperation, starting from social needs, enhance university-corporate cooperation and solve practical problems.

Prof. Amir REZA said that quantitative methods could be used to assess how to help students, teachers and colleges to grow up, implement the concepts of higher education and lifelong education, fasten ties with students, and meanwhile recruiting high-quality teachers to achieve the goal of internationalization.

Mr. XIE Wei, Deputy President of Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, agreed strongly the university-corporate cooperation model. He hoped that the school and the bank could strive for deeper cooperation, enhance scientific research and practical application.

Dr. LI Ruicheng, Senior Vice President of SAP, said that the fourth industrial revolution has brought us new changes, new sciences and technology and new industrial civilization, which had dramatically increased the demand for talents. He hoped that Tongji SEM could cultivate interdisciplinary talents for high-tech enterprises, explore and design new management curriculum and set up doctoral mobile stations to challenge the development of industry 4.0.

Prof. ZHOU Zhen expressed that Tongji SEM should cultivate the talents with high sense of mission and responsibility, great vision, great love and open-mind, and encouraged students to participate in practical projects, and enhance interdisciplinary cooperation in combination with advantaged disciplines.

Mr. JIN Youchun, Senior Director of HR Department, SAIC Motor, said that SAIC had a long cooperation history with Tongji University in various ways, including talent output, foundation, project cooperation, etc. It is expected that Tongji SEM would develop new courses based on the development and transformation of the automotive industry and output a large number of new talents with the development of artificial intelligence.

Mr. QIN Feng, Director of HR Department, Siemens China (China), hoped that Siemens, together with Tongji SEM, could cultivate talents with the sense of mission, initiative and gratitude, and help students to go further in their career development.

Mr. GUO Nan, associate director of HR Department, NIO pointed out that with the prosperous development of internet+ enterprises, Tongji SEM should strengthen collaboration with Internet enterprises in the future development.

Prof. HUO Jiazhen said the International Advisory Committee Meeting had been successfully held for 10 sessions. He firmly believed that Shanghai would become the world business center, joining New York and London in the future. At the same time, he suggested broadening the structure of the International Advisory Committee, inviting students’ parents and alumni to participate in the meeting and proposing insightful suggestions for the development Tongji SEM.

Established in 2008, the International Advisory Committee of Tongji SEM is an important part of the college’s governance structure. It is composed of experts with rich experience in education and management at home and abroad, who also have important influence in the field of economy and management. So far, it has been held for 10 sessions. The International Advisory Committee provides advice and guidance on major issues related to the school’s long-term development, such as strategic development, talent training and academic research, and promotes exchanges and cooperation between government, well-known enterprises and top business schools worldwide.
