Extreme weather events, such as extreme heat, pose significant challenges for food delivery couriers, affecting their performance, income and health. Not only do couriers have to race against time to complete orders in high temperatures to avoid fines for late deliveries, but they also face increased health risks. Recently, Associate Professor MAO Wenzheng of the Advanced Institute of Business of Tongji SEM, along with Professor LU Feng of Purdue University and Assistant Professor GE Run of the School of Public Economics and Administration of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, published an article in the Harvard Business Review. The article highlights the need for food delivery platforms and policymakers to take preventative measures to balance operational efficiency with the health and well-being of couriers.
