Making Sense of International Accounting
What you can expect
The Workshop provides participants with an understanding of the conceptual and contextual foundations of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) and contrasts them with US generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP). It also examines international differences that between countries such as China, France, Germany and Japan. It addresses the key issues of harmonization, political lobbying and the special accounting problems of multinational companies.
Content
· A short history of comparative international accounting;
· Causes and examples of international differences;
· Solutions offered by international standards, and their weaknesses;
· Contrasts with US GAAP;
· Accounting in China;
· Issues for groups, and small companies.
Takeaways
This Workshop empowers participants to understand why international accounting differences exist, and how international standards seek to bridge differences. In so doing, key issues are identified and explored, and reasons for differences between international standards and approaches in US, China and some other countries explored. The notion of harmonization is critiqued and the implications for managers in international environments assessed.
Specifically, the intended outcomes are to:
· Identify the drivers for international accounting harmonization;
· Identify solutions offered by international standards;
· Identify causes of some countries not wishing to adopt international standards.
· Explore the future of international standards.
· Assess the implications for international managers.

This one day Workshop is for executives who are involved in international business environments, facing challenges associated with differing measurement and valuation approaches in the global context, and are seeking to gain an understanding of and insights into the complexities of comparative international accounting: All Managers in charge of the strategy of the firm, CFOs, Chief accountants, Internal Auditors, CEOs of subsidiaries, etc.
Meet the Workshop faculty
PARKINSON Alan
Alan is a qualified accountant (FCCA and ACMA) with a Doctorate in Education (Institute of Education-IOE, University of London), a Masters Degree in Business (City University Business School, London). He is Director of Studies in the Department of Management Science and Innovation at University College London (UCL), and Visiting Professor in Managerial Accounting on the SIMBA Program at Tongji University, Shanghai. In the past he has been Head of The Centre for Financial Management at The Open University Business School, Head of School of Accounting & Taxation at South Bank Polytechnic, and Director of Accounting Studies at Hatfield Polytechnic. Alan has a wealth of experience of real world finance issues and solutions and communicating them to managers.
