ABSTRACT
Multinational enterprises (MNEs) often exhibit inconsistent sustainability performance across regions, typically attributed to variations in institutional pressures. Drawing on issue salience theory, we offer a complementary perspective by discussing how MNEs’ strategic decision-making shapes their decarbonization performance across home and host countries. Our empirical analyses are based on a unique dataset of country-level emissions from the Carbon Disclosure Project, supplemented by qualitative evidence from 24 interviews with multinationals from both developed and emerging economies.
