The 6th Advisory Committee Meeting 2014 Successfully Held in SEM

On Oct 11th, 2014, the Sixth Advisory Committee Meeting was held successfully at the School of Economics and Management (hereinafter referred to as SEM). Present at the meeting are members: Prof. WU Qidi, Director of Department of Management Science, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chairman of National Supervisory Committee for MBA Education, Former Member of Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports, National People’s Congress, Former President of Tongji University; Prof. GUO Chongqing, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Former Executive President of Tongji University; Prof. ZHOU Zhen, Former Dean of SEM, Tongji University; Prof. Dennis HANNO, President of Wheaton College, US; Prof. FionaDEVINE, Director of Manchester Business School, UK; Mr. Thomas SATTELBERGER, Former Chief Human Resources Officer, Director of Labor and Member of Management Board, Deutsche Telekom AG, Germany; Mr. GU Feng, CFO & Executive Director of Capital Operation Dept., Saic Motor Co., Ltd.; and Ms SHEN Kai, Government Affair Manager as representative of Mr. SHEN Xuejun, Senior Vice President of Siemens Ltd. China Shanghai Branch, and Prof. HUANG Yuxiang, Former Dean of SEM and Director of the Advisory Committee. Prof. Amir REZA, Vice Provost for International and Multicultural Education of Babson College, joined the meeting. Prof. Prof. WU Zhiqiang, Vice President of Tongji University, attended the meeting together with SEM’s management team.
 
 
Prof. HUANG, Director of the Committee, presided the meeting. Prof. WU Zhiqiang, Vice President of Tongji awarded the appointment certificate to the new committee members and extended warm welcome and gratitude to all the members on behalf of Tongji University. Prof. WU gave full recognition to SEM’s work in teaching, education, and internationalization in the past few years and extended wishes that advisory members could provide more insightful inputs to the development of SEM. Prof. HUO Jiazhen briefed the development of SEM over the past one year in regards to technology-facilitated on-line teaching, newly developed bachelor and master programs, faculty recruitment, output of scientific research, and international cooperation. HUO also responded to the issues raised by advisory members last year in ratio of international faculty, application-oriented curriculum development, and branding.
 
 
Panel discussion followed on the topic of “Recruitment, Development and Performance Assessment of Research-track Faculty and Practitioner”. The committee members suggested faculty recruitment should pay attention to the requirements and needs of SEM as well as those of various programs. Research-track faculty and practitioner review process can be carried out annually at different levels rather than adopting the same evaluation criteria and the workload requirement and the assessment criteria should be flexible to differentiate between research-track faculties and practitioners. Members suggest that SEM’s Academic Committee should take the above suggestions into consideration and further discuss assessment criteria.
 
 

The Advisory Committee of SEM, Tongji University was founded in 2009. Its members is comprised of influential government officers, entrepreneurs, presidents of universities, deans, experts and professors renowned in the field of economics and management both home and abroad. The Advisory Committee Meeting is held once a year. Its main function is to provide consultations on crucial decision-making for SEM’s medium-long term development planning, and offer propositions for SEM’s developing strategy.
