Complex Network Performance Analysis with Applications to Transportation and Supply Chains with Sustainability Implications

Abstract: The last decade has been marked by an escalation of disasters, which have caused severe destructions to critical infrastructure networks and enormous negative impacts on economies.  In addition, the degradation of the critical infrastructure networks over time has led to more greenhouse gas emissions, which caused more disastrous weather.  To effectively protect infrastructure networks and mitigate its negative impacts on the environment, it is imperative to understand the vulnerability of networks. In this presentation, the recent research results on network performance measure are discussed. The new measure is shown to have advantages over the existing complex network measures.  Finally, given the underlying topological similarities among many critical infrastructure networks, the proposed measure is then used to analyze real-life networks. Implications, such as the environmental sustainability and network reliability, are also examined.

Dr. Qiang is currently an assistant professor of Operations Management at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Qiang received his PhD from University of Massachusetts Amherst, M.S. from University of Colorado Boulder, and B.E. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Qiang’s research interests lie in the area of network vulnerability and robustness. He developed network performance/efficiency measures that have been applied to supply chains, transportation networks, the Internet, and financial networks. Dr. Qiang’s research has attracted attention internationally and it has been used in practice in both Ireland and in Germany. His research has appeared in such journals as: Journal of Global Optimization, OMEGA, Optimization Letters, the International Transactions in Operational Research, and Transportation Research Part A, etc..  In addition, Dr. Qiang co-authored the book, Fragile Networks: Identifying Vulnerabilities and Synergies in an Uncertain World, was published by Wiley in 2009.
Dr. Qiang is the recipient of the INFORMS Judith Liebman award in 2009. His doctoral dissertation has won Charles V. Wootan Award from the Council of University Transportation Centers, 2009. Dr. Qiang is a member of INFORMS and Decision Science Institute.
