September 3, 2021, Shanghai – the Welcome Ceremony for New International students of SEM was held successfully online. In Fall semester 2021, SEM has welcomed 198 new international students from 39 countries, including 80 degree seeking students.

Come to SEM and develop a long-term strategy

At the opening ceremony, Prof. CHEN Song delivered a welcome speech. He welcomed all international freshmen and hoped that they would, while obtaining new academic knowledge and professional skills for future business development, gain understandings about China and the world from a more comprehensive and diversified perspective. China is country full of opportunities and it is not easy to understand the complexity behind Chinese market and Chinese culture. Therefore, Prof. CHEN urged students to develop long-term strategy if they would like to start business in China in the future.

Then, the staff from Undergraduate and Postgraduate Administration Center of SEM gave an introduction briefing on the academic regulations, including course credits and selection requirements.

Come to SEM and enjoy a culture journey

To help international students to get better understandings on China and Tongji-SEM, the opening ceremony has a number of cultural interaction activities. By sharing their pre-shot videos on “Picking My Favorite Culture Element”, the students got a better understanding on each other’s culture; through watching the introductory video on Tongji university, students learned about the development history, campus scenery and community activities at Tongji. The welcome ceremony coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival. The international students felt the profound charm of Traditional Chinese culture through a Kunqu opera play named ” Peony Pavilion “. The staff members from International cooperation and accreditation office put on traditional Chinese clothing and performed a song called “Prelude to Water melody” to the international students to pass them blessings and best wishes in this challenging time.

Lastly, an online group photo was taken to keep the precious memories in this special time.

It is worth mentioning that, in recent years, there are more and more international students choosing to study and do exchange in Tongji SEM, the number of students has ranked first in Tongji University, which is a living proof of SEM’s continuous improvement on talent cultivation and international influence. SEM will continue to explore collaboration with top universities around the world, to promote international exchange among Chinese and foreign students and to develop outstanding management talents with international vision.
