Assistant Professor TAN Hongbin Published an Article Revealing the Universality of Empirical Research in the Field of Social Sciences

Assistant Professor TAN Hongbin of SEM, together with Professor Andrew DELIOS of National University of Singapore, Professor Elena CLEMENTE of Stockholm School of Economics, and Professor Eric UHLMANN of INSEAD, jointly published an article entitled “Examining the Generalizability of Research Findings from Archival Data”. This paper is the first to systematically examine the reproducibility and generalizability of empirical research findings in the social sciences. Unlike natural sciences, social sciences are usually based on research data generated in non-experimental environments such as observational data and second-hand archival data, so it is difficult to replicate previous research results. This makes social science research often confronted with sharper questions and criticisms, leading to the so-called replication crisis. In order to correctly assess this crisis, the research team took 6 years to convene more than 100 researchers from famous universities and research institutions around the world, and used the same second-hand database in the fields of strategic management and international business to publish in SMJ, JIBS, etc. The key results of 29 papers in top international journals were re-empirically analyzed. The paper, published in PNAS, is an important part of the empirical revolution in management in recent years, redefining how we conduct research in strategic management, international business, and organizational behavior.
