Environmental Science and Accounting (Dual Degree)

The achievement of the “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” goals is crucial to the sustainable development of the Chinese nation, and it is almost inevitable that a new round of industrial and energy revolution will emerge in the future. A growing number of industries are accelerating the formulation of “carbon peak” action plans, mapping out timelines and roadmaps for achieving carbon peak, and actively researching implementation pathways for “carbon neutrality”. The cultivation of dual bachelor’s degree talents in “Environmental Science + Accounting” will closely align with the increasingly urgent societal demand for such professionals.

The distinctive feature of this program lies in its innovative concept for cultivating talent in the context of the dual carbon goals, focusing on and integrating “green environmental technology” and “carbon management knowledge”. It aims to develop a talent pool with a knowledge background in the “Five Carbons” (carbon science, carbon technology, carbon accounting, carbon auditing, and carbon management), thereby meeting the national demand for talent to achieve the dual carbon goals. Tongji University possesses profound grounding and advantages in building a teaching faculty for dual carbon talent cultivation and developing research platforms. The faculty team specializing in environmental management within the Environmental Science program has been deeply involved in establishing the “Yangtze River Delta Sustainable Development Research Institute” and played a key supporting role in releasing the “Guiding Opinions on Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Work in the Yangtze River Delta Eco-Green Integrated Development Demonstration Zone” and the “Implementation Plan for Carbon Peak in the Yangtze River Delta Eco-Green Integrated Development Demonstration Zone”. Furthermore, faculty from both Environmental Science and Accounting have jointly undertaken extensive teaching and research work at the UN Environment Programme-Tongji University Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, cultivating a large number of international environmental management talents in areas such as climate change response, energy utilization, urban sustainable development, and environmental policy.
