Intelligent Building

In 2015, Tongji University first proposed the concept of “Construction 4.0 (Intelligent Construction)”; in 2017, the Intelligent Construction program was approved by the Ministry of Education as a “New Engineering” discipline; and in 2018, the program enrolled its first cohort of students in China. Since its establishment, the Intelligent Construction program has leveraged the strong foundation of the College of Civil Engineering and actively innovated its talent cultivation model. It was approved as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2020 and has consistently ranked first in the Soft Science China University Program Rankings since 2022.

Intelligent Construction deeply integrates the traditional construction industry with strategic emerging industries such as big data, artificial intelligence, robotics, and 3D printing, aiming to build green, low-carbon, and intelligent dream homes for humanity. Based on civil engineering and connected by information technology, the Intelligent Construction program integrates mechanical engineering, materials engineering, engineering management, and other disciplines to carry out AI-empowered multidisciplinary talent cultivation. It focuses on cutting-edge directions such as intelligent planning and design, intelligent equipment and construction, and intelligent disaster prevention and maintenance, cultivating future-oriented interdisciplinary innovators who possess both civil engineering and intelligent science literacy.

Through the deep integration of civil engineering, information technology, mechanical engineering, control science, materials science, management, and other disciplines, and following the path and methods of computational intelligence, perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, and autonomous intelligence, the program aims to integrate material flow, energy flow, and information flow, reconstruct the entire engineering lifecycle, transform and upgrade traditional engineering fields, foster integrated applications in emerging interdisciplinary areas, and drive cross-industry integrated scenario innovation. The goal is to create future green, low-carbon, and intelligent dream homes for humanity. Specific research directions include construction digital twins, construction robotics, engineering smart management, urban renewal, intelligent maintenance of infrastructure, new energy infrastructure, resilient cities, and engineering big data. It also conducts research on engineering frontiers such as construction in extreme environments and the engineering internet.
